The Ins and Outs Of Finding A Job in CS

Cheers to summer; a time for cocktails, patio hangs, and the unnerving feeling that things are starting anew in September.

For some of us, this feeling fuels us; a chance to kick things back into high gear and make the changes we've been thinking about since May. For others, it fills us with dread; am I delivering my best work? Am I on the right career path at the right company?

I already work in CS, but am looking to change companies.

The world of CS is constantly growing and changing, which can make it hard to find the right role for you. Here are a few questions to help narrow down your playing field:

  • Is there a specific industry you're interested in (i.e. HealthTech, FinTech, or [and it may sound crazy, but stick with us] non-tech?!)?

  • Do you have a preference between a SaaS or non-SaaS company?

  • Are there mission items that are important to you (i.e. for-profit, social impact, etc.)?

  • What size organization are you most comfortable with?

  • What type of CS are you looking for (i.e. on-boarding, customer support, B2B management, etc.)?

Once you've answered the questions that make sense for you, see what trends line up with what you've identified. Then, leverage your network (including your CS in Focus community!) to find the organizations that are hiring and best meet the needs you've identified.

I am looking to break into CS from another industry.

We regularly hear from people who are trying to find their first positions in Customer Success, but who may have been working their way up in other industries. It's always hard to switch gears and make a professional direction change, but here's a universal truth: almost everyone in CS started somewhere else. Whether intention or unintentional, CS is still new enough that many people started elsewhere, such as in sales, account management, or operations.

Wherever you are now, CS needs your skills and expertise. Look at your current role and identify where there are similarities or crossover between your current responsibilities and those of someone in a comparable position on a Customer Success team. Then, find people who are in those roles at organizations that interest you (see our question checklist!) and reach out for informational meetings and interviews.

You'll be surprised how willing folks are to lend a helping hand - take our word for it!
